TM990/189
The TM990/189 university card is a learning card equipped with the 16-bits Texas Instruments TMS9900 microprocessor.
This card, from 1979, is the first 16 bits of the time and it completes (belatedly) the release of the previous SBC (Single Board Computer) based on 8 bits processors.
The originality of this card, besides its processor, is the presence of a TI-59 front panel which serves as a keyboard and display.
Programs can be entered either directly in hexadecimal, or in assembly language which is translated ("assembled") line by line.

TM990/U89
Released later, the TM990/U89 model is not really a new model but rather a new name for the same card equipped with different EPROM.
Indeed, the difference comes from the U32 and U33 sockets which support "University Basic".
By replacing the EPROM TMS4732 with the EPROM TMS2532 on socket U33 and adding the EPROM TMS2716 (or TMS2516) on socket U32 the TM990/189 card becomes a TM990/U89.
While the TM990/189 is a learning card for the assembler language of the TMS9900 (the TMS4732 contains the assembler), the TM990/U89 is a "University BASIC" learning card (the TMS2532 and the TMS2716, or TMS2516, contain the UBASIC).

University BASIC is released pre-programmed in EPROM which
may be directly installed in the EPROM sockets of the
TM990/189 board. The release package consists of:
• 2 EPROM's containing the University BASIC" code:
- One 2532 EPROM (4K x 8 bvtes)
- One 2715 EPROM (2K x 8 bytes)

2.4 EPROM INSERTION
The user should carefully remove the TMS4732 (UNIBUG) EPROM
from the socket marked U33 and replace it with the TMS 2532
EPROM.
After following the modification procedure found in Section
9, page 9-1 of the TM990/189 Microcomputer User s Guide,
install the TMS 2716 EPROM in the socket marked U32. Refer
to Figure 2-1 for appropriate socket markings

TMS9995 Microprocessor Kit
A "TMS9995 Microprocessor Kit" board could also be find on the web.
This board, by Professor Kswichit Sirichote, is for sale on ebay and all information about it can be found on the website "kswichit.net".
Although built on a different processor than the TM990/189 and not a clone of it, the programming is relatively identical.
Mostly much faster, the TMS9995 was a successor to the TMS9900.

The SIM990 simulator by Dave Pitt appears to be the only existing program concerning the TMS990.
No installation required, just a "zip" file to unzip.
Functional, it perfectly replicates the programs of the TM990/189, provided you understand its subtleties.
You will need to enter the hexadecimal codes of the instructions preceded by a zero, i.e. 5 characters, and remember to put a breakpoint on the end instruction so that the program launched by G (GO) stops.

The SIM990 simulator by Dave Pitt is usable with a set of commands that can be used sequentially.
The Gen_SIM990.xls utility allows you to generate command scripts from TMS990 assembly language programs, as well as commands for loading PC, WP, and Breakpoint pointers, and also with register values ??(Workspace).
The command script is transfered, from Gen_SIM990.xls to the SIM990 simulator, by copy/paste.
(Gen_SIM990.xls also generates the programs in OBJ format)

Books and manuals specifically concerning the TM990/189 map are as rare and hard to find as websites that refer to it.
On the other hand, documents concerning the 990 series are fortunately more numerous and some websites refer to them.

Among the documents found on the net, a final year project was carried out by two students (Mohamed Tahar Fradjia, El Hadi Atmane) from the University of Algiers.
This document is a true gem, entirely handwritten, and it is hoped that these two students will have obtained their engineering degree from the University of Science and Technology of Algiers.
